Sleep and Health – Is Sleep Loss Affecting Your Wellbeing?

Lack of sleep or irregular sleeping patterns are known to impact on the immune system that results in poor health. Not just bad moods and mental fogginess, the lack of quality slumber can have serious affects on health.

Studies have shown that a person who is not taking proper sleep is likely to suffer from illnesses (such as common cold) due to low immunity, and may undergo a slower recovery process.

Here are some surprising – and serious – reasons that confirm that lack of sleep is bad for your health:

Sleep Causes ObesityLack Of Sleep Causes Obesity

Sleep deprivation is known to cause gain of weight, as people tend to eat more. When the brain suffers from the lack of sleep, it responds with the need for high-calorie junk food.

The fattening foods and sugary items that late-nighters tend to consume stimulate the brain responses and keep it active through the night. Also, in a sleep-deprived state we will have more urge to eat more than their body requirements.

SleeplessnessSleeplessness and Cognitive Weaknesses

Sleep alters the functioning of our brain in other ways as well. The relationship between sleep and cognitive power is a strong one and is directly proportional. Lack of sleep will hurt the cognitive processes and hinders with the thinking and learning processes.

If you are not sleeping properly, you will suffer from impaired attention, poor alertness, and lack of concentration, reasoning, and problem solving.

Sleep and Serious Health Risks

A number of studies have indicated the links between sleep habits and the risk of developing certain diseases. Sleeping disorders and chronic sleep loss put you at risk for serious medical conditions including:

  • Sleep and Health RisksHeart disease
  • Heart attack
  • Heart failure
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • and it shortens your life expectancy.

Lack of Sleep Kills Sex Drive

Low Ibido LevelsAccording to specialists, lack of sleep is said to impact the libido levels in the body which results in less interest in sex. Moreover, other reactions related to sleep that effects the drive include depleted energy, sleepiness, increased tension, and slow cognition.

In a study, men with sleep apnea suffer from disrupted sleep, which results in low levels of testosterones.

Sleep, Performance, and Public Safety

History has shown that sleep can affect our response and judgment. The historic incidents such as the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island (1979), massive oil spill by Exxon Valdez (1979) and the nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl (1986) are all related to sleep deprivation.

Other than such major accidents, sleeplessness can be a result of major incidents at roads and factories. With improper state of mind, lethargies, lack of focus and poor judgment may increase the risk of serious accidents and injuries. Sometimes the effects can even be deadly as in the case of drowsy driving fatalities.

The costs of sleep if much greater than most people think. It is important that we get plentiful sleep at night. If you wake up tired and long for a nap throughout the day, you are not getting enough sleep.  Find out how much sleep you need and then try to achieve it.
